Indiana Woman Shoots Attacker Dead After Sexual Assault Inside Her Home

CUMBERLAND, IN — A Sunday evening disturbance in a Cumberland neighborhood ended in tragedy after a woman defended herself from a violent sexual assault inside her home.
According to the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly before 7:00 p.m. on September 28, 2025, to the 11300 block of Dunshire Drive after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a weapon.
When officers arrived, they encountered an adult female outside the residence who reported she had been attacked inside her home. She informed officers that a man had been shot during the incident.
Inside the residence, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders provided aid, and the man was transported to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency surgery, he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that the male was an acquaintance who had been invited to the residence. At some point during the visit, the man allegedly made several unwanted sexual advances toward the woman. When she attempted to create distance, he followed her into a separate room where a sexual assault began. During the attack, the woman was able to retrieve her firearm and fire a single shot in self-defense.
The woman sustained injuries during the assault and was treated at a local hospital. Investigators stated that physical evidence at the scene supports her account of events. She has been cooperative throughout the investigation.
This case highlights the grim reality that violent encounters can happen even in familiar settings and sometimes with people the victim knows. The woman’s ability to access her firearm during the assault allowed her to stop the attack and save her own life. For those who choose to carry a firearm, practicing situational awareness and ensuring quick access to a defensive tool in moments of crisis can make the difference between survival and tragedy.
