WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas announced Thursday that he will not seek re-election, ending his campaign for another term in Congress.

Gonzales made the announcement in a statement posted on X, saying the decision came after reflection and discussions with his family.

The three-term congressman did not reference the controversy that has surrounded his campaign in recent weeks.

Reports indicate Gonzales admitted to having an affair with a staff member who later died by suicide. House Republican leadership had also called for him to withdraw from his re-election race while an ethics investigation moves forward.

Before the announcement, Gonzales had been preparing to face firearms industry figure and gun rights activist Brandon Herrera in a Republican primary runoff scheduled for May.

With Gonzales stepping aside, Herrera is now expected to move forward as the Republican candidate in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.

Herrera responded publicly to the news.

Herrera also pointed to several issues he says are important to the district, including border security, oil theft, water rights, and data center development.

Known to many gun owners online as a prominent firearms content creator, Herrera built a large following producing firearm-focused videos and commentary. His campaign has drawn attention from gun owners across the country who view the race as an opportunity for a strong pro-Second Amendment voice in Congress.

Texas’ 23rd Congressional District covers a large portion of the U.S.-Mexico border and West Texas. The district has historically favored Republican candidates.

Herrera is now expected to face Democrat Katy Padilla Stout in the November general election.

For gun owners, congressional races like this one carry national importance. Members of Congress shape the laws and policies that determine whether Americans can continue to exercise their Second Amendment rights without unnecessary restrictions.

The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental constitutional liberty. Many voters closely watch elections to ensure their representatives will defend that right and protect the freedoms of law-abiding gun owners.
