11-Year-Old Charged As Adult With Homicide In Father’s Death After Nintendo Switch Taken Away

An 11-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide after fatally shooting his father on his birthday following a dispute over a video game console. Investigators say the child accessed a locked safe to retrieve the firearm and confessed to the shooting immediately after the incident.

DUNCANNON, PA (2-minute read) — A tragic sequence of events on a young boy’s birthday has left a Perry County community reeling and an 11-year-old facing adult homicide charges. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Pennsylvania State Police responded to a residence on South Market Street in Duncannon Borough where they discovered 42-year-old Douglas Dietz dead in his bed from a gunshot wound to the head. The suspect, Clayton Dietz, who had just turned 11, allegedly carried out the shooting because he was angry that his parents had taken away his Nintendo Switch and ordered him to go to sleep.

According to the police affidavit, Clayton’s mother was awakened by a loud noise and the smell of fireworks before discovering the grim scene. Troopers at the residence reported hearing the child tell his mother, “I killed Daddy”. Investigators later learned that Clayton found the key to a gun safe in his father’s drawer, retrieved a revolver, and intentionally loaded and fired the firearm while his father was sleeping.

Understanding the Dangers of Firearm Accessibility

This case brings up a critical conversation regarding safe storage and the accessibility of firearms within the home. While the firearm was stored in a safe, the fact that a child could locate the key and operate the firearm highlights a significant failure in the security layer. Clayton reportedly told investigators that he was “mad” and had not considered the consequences of his actions before pulling the trigger.

Because of the severity of the charge, Clayton has been charged as an adult under Pennsylvania law. He is currently being held without bail at the Perry County Prison. The Susquenita School District has already begun providing counseling services to students affected by the news of the tragedy.

Safety Tip: Secure firearm storage is only effective if the keys or combinations are also kept entirely out of reach of children. For parents, it is crucial to understand that children are often more observant of where keys are hidden than we realize. Using a high-quality biometric safe or a complex digital combination that is never shared can prevent unauthorized access. Furthermore, educating children on the finality of firearm use is an essential part of responsible gun ownership in any household.
