ROCHESTER, NY (3-minute read) — An early morning stabbing at a gas station on Rochester’s northwest side ended quickly thanks to the swift action of a legally armed civilian who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Just after 7:15 a.m. Monday, Rochester Police were called to a gas station on Lyell Avenue where a 44-year-old man had been stabbed in the upper body. Officers arrived to find the victim injured but conscious, and he was promptly transported to a local hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, a 48-year-old woman also from Rochester and reportedly known to the victim, was arrested a short distance from the scene. She now faces a charge of second-degree assault.
According to Lt. Eric Rathfelder of the Rochester Police Department, the situation could have been far worse if not for the presence of a responsible gun owner who was inside the store when the attack occurred. The civilian drew his legally registered handgun to stop the stabbing, effectively ending the assault before more serious harm could be done. No shots were fired, and no one else was injured during the incident.
Concealed Carry Civilian Helps De-Escalate Knife Attack
This incident brings attention to the often-debated role of armed citizens in public safety. While carrying a concealed firearm comes with significant responsibility, this case shows how proper training and legal firearm ownership can save lives.
Under New York law, individuals must meet stringent requirements to legally carry a firearm, including background checks, fingerprinting, and firearms safety training. When used correctly and lawfully, a concealed carry handgun can be a powerful tool for self-defense and community protection.
As always, police advise anyone who finds themselves in a dangerous situation to prioritize safety, contact authorities immediately, and intervene only when absolutely necessary.
Safety Tip: If you choose to carry a concealed firearm, always stay situationally aware, avoid escalating conflicts, and train regularly to ensure you can act decisively and legally in high-stress situations.
