Jackson Homeowner Fires at Suspect Fleeing Police Who Attempted to Enter Home

JACKSON, MS — A Jackson homeowner fired a shot at a suspect who attempted to enter their residence while fleeing from police on Friday. The suspect, 23-year-old Marquavious Harris, was later arrested by Capitol Police.

The incident unfolded after Capitol Police conducted a traffic stop near the Village Apartments on Raymond Road. During the stop, officers discovered that Harris, a passenger in the vehicle, had active felony warrants from Florida. Upon learning this, Harris fled the scene on foot.

According to Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), Harris attempted to enter a nearby home while evading police. In response, the homeowner discharged a firearm at Harris. It doesn’t appear that the homeowner struck the suspect, but if he did, police reported there were no serious injuries, and Harris was taken into custody.

In addition to the felony warrants from Florida, Harris has been charged with possession of a controlled substance by Capitol Police.

This incident highlights the need to be prepared for anything, not just common threats like robberies or home invasions, but also unexpected situations like a suspect fleeing from police attempting to enter your home. While no injuries occurred in this instance, homeowners should be aware of the laws surrounding self-defense and the use of force in their state. Always prioritize safety and be ready to contact law enforcement if a similar situation arises.
